Puppy Shower
|
Our
good friends and co-workers threw us a baby shower…I mean…puppy
shower when Tsunami came home to live with us. Their motivation?
They knew Mike and I consider our dog(s) members of our
family. What wonderful friends to share in the "birth"
of our new puppy!
Jeanette
Maly and Jane Faulkner planned this delightful party.
There were decorations and streamers, food for the adults,
a doggie-shaped cake, and gifts for the newest member
of the family. The gifts included numerous toys, a canine
flotation jacket, chewy sticks, bed, "baby" blanket, Christmas
stocking, portrait sitting (a wonderful, unique idea),
and treats. We also received many congratulation cards
to commemorate our new "child."

|
The
most memorable and best gifts were not the material ones but
the warmth and compassion of our friends celebrating an important
event in our lives. Another important advantage of the puppy
shower was the ability to socialize at an early age.
 |
As
the Shiba personality is developing, human contact is
vital. Puppies should be allowed to interact with people
of different sizes and ages. Both adults and children
were at Tsunami's puppy shower. All participated in picking
him up, touching, or petting him. When not socialized
well as puppies, Shibas may become wary and fearful of
strangers. Those Shibas well socialized will more likely
exhibit friendliness and courage.

|
The
Shiba temperament is captured accurately with the Japanese word,
"kan-i", meaning spirited boldness or brave and outgoing. At
his party, Tsunami demonstrated "kan-i" as one of the party
goers commented their surprise over his confidence level at
such a young age.
When
a friend brings home a new puppy, consider throwing them a puppy
shower. You share in a very important moment as you strengthen
your connection with that person. Plus, you are making a positive
impact in that puppy's future. It truly takes a community to
successfully raise a puppy. Help get them off to a great start!
