About the Shiba Inu

There is a wealth of information on the Shiba breed. Rather than trying to find yet another way to restate this well-published material, we are providing reference resources and a link to articles we have found to be delightfully written and accurate. Please click on the link and you will be taken to the article's site.

Shiba Articles

  1. "Shibas" by Myrna Shiboleth, Shaar Hagai Kennels, Israel. This is a favorite. It is delightfully written and quite accurate as I reflect on life with a Shiba. I love her closing statement, "The shiba may be a small package, but it has a big soul, and it may take a lifetime to understand them - but it is well worth the effort." http://www.sakura.hagai.net/shibasby_myrna_shiboleth.html
  2. "Mysteries of the Shiba Inu" Another charming article on this enchanting breed. The last line of the article reads, "Not only do you enjoy companionship with the animal but you develop a kinship and friendship with all living things." How true! http://www3.sympatico.ca/shiba.inu/myst.htm
  3. "The Smart & Spirited Shiba Inu" by Kim D.R. Dearth. This is a breed "Spotlight" article from Dog World Magazine. Several NSCA officers are quoted. The opening paragraph speaks volumes of truth as it writes, "Shibas are fun-loving, spirited and seem to be convinced of their own superiority - they definitely are not a breed for the weak of heart!"
  4. "Taking Care of Shibas" Short and sweet…good ideas and considerations (includes descriptive photos) for raising a Shiba. http://www.shibas.net/care/index.htm
  5. The Digital Domain of the Shibas of Sagewood This is the website for Tsunami's breeder. There is an area to select articles from a pull-down menu. Dave Boykin and Jonah Greene have pulled together a number of articles on Shibas (from general information to care to humor). This is one of the best sites for a great compilation of Shiba information. http://www.shibas.com

  6. Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D, The Other End of the Leash, Ballantine Books, New York, 2002. This book is not Shiba specific. However, it is an excellent resource "sharing a revolutionary, new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs." This is an excellent book that should be digested slowly and then re-read again.
  7. Melanie Kipp, S.M.A.R.T. (Successful Motivation and Reward Training) Pet Dog Training, Melanie Kipp, Box 3666, Kenai, AK 99611, 2000. Website: http://www.kippsdogs.com
  8. Turid Rugaas, On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals, Legacy By Mail, Inc., Carlsborg, WA, 1997. Again, not a Shiba specific book. This book will introduce another "language" in speaking with dogs…their 'language.'
