The
second class required by condition of contract was basic obedience.
This class was to be completed by the time Tsunami reached one
year of age. Again, we appreciate the wisdom of puppy class
and the basic obedience training during these formative months.
Basic obedience training is best done as your dog is reaching
adolescence. This class continues building from the basics of
puppy kindergarten. These sessions continue to engrain in your
Shiba's mind that you are dominant…that you are ultimately in
charge.
Shibas
are extremely intelligent. They are a "thinking" breed. This
matches what they were initially bred for…primitive hunting
and independent thinking. These "great thinkers" are easily
bored with repetition. You would do best to find an instructor
skilled in obedience training for the "thinking" breeds.

Tsunami is congratulated during graduation
ceremonies.

Tsunami and Mike practice "loose leash
walking"
We were lucky once again to find just an instructor at Peninsula
Dog Obedience Group with Melanie Kipp.
Melanie
is a national speaker and author on dog obedience. She provides
class instruction for Peninsula Dog Obedience as well as private
instruction. Among her many accomplishments are obedience titles
on the German Shepherd Dogs and Chow Chows. Melanie has authored
a wonderful book, "S.M.A.R.T.
- Successful Motivation and Reward Training" on techniques
using positive motivation. This book breaks down training into
small successful steps. We would highly recommend this book
for Shiba training. There are many helpful tips that go beyond
teaching basic commands.
As
I have mentioned before, Tsunami loves "school." He has completed
basic and intermediate obedience classes. Our enthusiastic student
will soon begin competition obedience classes. Stay tuned for
his progress!
