Shiba Extravaganza
On
August 17, 2003 Liz Williams of Anchorage, AK coordinated the
first Shiba Extravaganza held in the same city. The event was
created to educate folks about our delightful breed. With a
terrific turn-out, approximately 20 Shibas (of all colors) with
their families participated in the fun and games (with prizes),
agility tunnel, and breed information. Tsunami won a beautiful
Shiba tile for winning first place in the toss and catch game.
Then he won some adorable Shiba note cards for second place
in the "put a t-shirt and socks on your shiba and race across
the finish line" game. His sister, Bella, edged him out for
the win in that game.

The
Shiba Extravaganza was developed when Liz recognized that since
the Shiba is becoming more popular in our state, offering breed
education and breeder referral information would provide a much
needed service to the public. Shiba puppies are being sold at
local pet stores by the dozens each year. As owner and training
director for Alaska Dog Sports, Liz identified that "most of
the people purchasing these puppies are impulse buyers with
no idea what that cute little fuzzball they are buying is going
to turn into." Alaska has been dealing with several rescue situations
involving pet store dogs in the past few years. Liz makes a
good point when she says, "Trying to pretend the Shiba Inu is
still a 'rare' breed and not working to openly educate the public
is going to do more harm than good." An event such as this may
certainly serve to interest the public in this breed even more.
But at least these people will go into their decision with some
information and tools to help them find a good breeder and a
healthy, stable dog.
Plus,
what a delightful opportunity to meet fellow Shiba fanciers!
When bringing together a group of people owned by Shibas….you
know the stories must be colorful! We definitely hope this turns
into an annual event. Excellent work Liz!
